The following preview aims to provide an appetizer that sets the table for the upcoming season. The Class A volleyball season commences with the Whitefish Tip-off tournament this Saturday, August 30.Northwest A Polson Last season's Lady Pirate girls volleyball squad was far more competitive in their games than their overall record tended to indicate. Second year head volleyball coach Jan Toth, along with asst. coaches Julie Duford and Tammy Kelley, anticipate that the experience that several players acquired last year as well as added stress on fundamentals and execution will prove to be the added ingredients that tip a bigger share of those close games into the win column. One area of concentration will be improving upon the team serving percentage, which would have been a sufficient enough adjustment for the Lady Pirates to have won close to every match last season. Reprising their roles on the varsity are two all-conference selections, 5'9" jr. honorable-mention outside/middle hitter Nicole Davey and jr. second-team libero Staci Benson. A pair of returning upperclassmen who were also varsity letter winners include 5'8" jr. outside hitter Loni Havlovick and 5'9" jr. outside hitter Christa Redcrow. Two returning sophomore varsity letter winners are 5'8" outside hitter Breanne Kelley and 5'6" setter Kayla Duford. Three sophomores from the divisional team from last season include 5'10" middle hitter Sallie Sams, 5'6" defensive specialist Marissa McCrea and returnee Kendyall Rochin. Incoming freshman Riley Kenney, a 5'8" utility player who will likely serve in multiple capacities as middle hitter and backup setter, rounds out the squad. The junior varsity squad will incorporate some double duty assignments from underclassmen who make up part of the varsity roster along with Kylie Knutson, Brook Denault, Cecilly Grant, and McCall Banner. Replacing graduates the caliber of Ishan Wylie, Kristen Cordier, Kallia Orr presents its challenges, but the Maiden's upcoming season looks promising as they field a squad laden with returning seniors. First year head volleyball coach Shae Hutchinson and asst. coach Jamie Schall will be able to draw on extensive varsity experience which seeks to improve on their standing in the conference from last year. Although fellow player Allison Crenshaw also graduated, the tragic accident that took her life this past summer is likely to provide added incentive for former teammates wishing to commemorate their friend with a season dedicated to her memory. Returning letter winners include 5'9" sr. Carli Starkel and 5'8" sr. all-conference honorable-mention selection Kaylee Larson, both outside hitters with diverse capabilities and good court presence. A pair of 5'9" fellow seniors, middle hitter/blocker Bridgette Lake and outside hitter/setter Kelsey Swalling, a transfer from Dickenson, North Dakota, provide added punch at both offensive and defensive ends of the court. Splitting duties will be 5'6" seniors Kelly Lake and April Soukup as well as 5'5" sr. Amanda Bartel, who will all likely rove between positions as needed. Setting the table for her teammates will be 5'4" sr. setter Kelsey Clairmont, who will likely see extensive playing time at that crucial position. Rounding out the squad are a pair of sophomores, 5'5" libero/setter Taylor Lynch and 5'9" middle hitter Alice Van Gunten. » Be the first to leave a comment
