Red Devils put on showcase in boys' home opener

Newcomers chip in as Graham socks S. Alamance

GRAHAM - As introductions go, this one brought high grades for the Graham boys' basketball team.
The Red Devils made their home opener a showcase against Southern Alamance on Wednesday night, a look-at-what-we've-got 86-36 nonleague romp.
"I think we're going to be really good," senior forward Dodson McPherson said. "Our defense brings us together. It makes us look better."
It would be difficult to look much smoother than in this one. Senior transfers J.B. Baldwin and Nate Blackburn made their home debuts, while McPherson and friends showed that the incumbents will offer major contributions as well.
"Let's hope so," coach Mike Williams said of visions of a strong season. "We've got some parts."
Baldwin, a 6-foot-6 forward, showed an inside-outside repertoire that could delight Graham fans all winter. His 24-point, seven-rebound, five-steal, four-blocked shot outing pretty much summed it up.
"Everyone has been saying, ‘Who's J.B.? Who's J.B.?' " Baldwin said. "This is J.B. ... a little bit of everything."
McPherson needed barely more than the opening 11 minutes to score 12 of his 15 points. Blackburn, formerly of Western Alamance, put up seven of his 13 points, including a dunk off a steal in the opening minute, in the first half.
Baldwin had eight first-quarter points. McPherson and Ryan Henderson each grabbed eight rebounds.
In total, it was quite a show by Graham (2-0).
"You've seen it," Southern Alamance coach Brad Freeze said afterward. "I knew they were going to be good, but I didn't expect to get beat that bad."
Southern Alamance (1-1) was hampered by the absence of two guards because of illness and injury. Tyler Overman and Kellen Rankin scored eight points apiece for the Patriots.
